Germany, Leader in Photovoltaic Energy
Germany’s recently approved “climate package” is its latest step in securing the country’s position as a leading investment location in renewable energies. “The reforms maintain attractive feed-in tariffs and strengthen the legal framework for energy-efficiency investments, therefore adding to Germany’s already inviting investment conditions in photovoltaic (PV) energy,” says David Wortmann, Director of the Renewable Energies and Resources team at Invest in Germany. Invest in Germany will be outlining the country’s investment advantages at the 23rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (PVSEC), September 1 – 5, 2008 in Valencia, Spain.
One of the main drivers of PV investment in Germany is the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG in German). The EEG requires power companies to buy renewable energy from owners of renewable energy installations at a rate that is above the standard retail price.

Dubai launches major initiative to harness solar energy
Dubai, Oct 25 (IANS) As part of its efforts to reduce pollution and create alternative sources of energy to meet growing demand, the city of Dubai has launched a major initiative to harness solar energy.Chairman of the Dubai government’s investment vehicle Dubai World Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem has launched Solar Technologies, the Middle East’s largest photovoltaic manufacturing facility, in the course of the Green Dubai World Forum-2008, currently underway here.
As part of the first phase of the project, a 130-MW manufacturing plant will be set up and it will go into production in the last quarter of 2010.
Solar energy jobs info
Solar energy has experienced a remarkable growth over the last ten years. The growth in installed solar power capacity has been accompanied by the creation of new green jobs in solar energy industry. Solar energy industry isn’t only employing scientists and researchers to look for cheap and efficient solar cells but also people that know how to build solar panels, people to sell and deliver solar panels, as well as the usual jobs such as accountants or managers. So there’s really a lot of options to choose from.
People who want more specialized knowledge about solar power should look for solar power programs that are becoming increasingly popular on many universities across the country. Solar industry is constantly growing, not only in United States but also on global scale, and so many more universities will start to offer degrees in solar power studies.
Active Solar Water Heating Systems
And the installation of a solar energy powered hot water heater in a million dollar Street of Dreams home at Phillips Landing in southwest Orlando recently is a clear signal that both builders and consumers are beginning to accept solar energy as a “mainstream” resource.

Solar Rebates
With the help from CAL SEIA, the State of California has put in place a range of financial incentives that substantially reduce the costs of solar energy systems. Information about these incentives is described below – scroll down for information on whether rebates are treated as taxable income or not (they are not).
Contact a CAL SEIA member company or call your local utility to get specific local information. CAL SEIA members assist consumers in filing these applications!
for more information about these programs, go to: www.gosolarcalifornia.ca.gov. CALSEIA recommends obtaining more than one bid for your solar project.
Environmental Policy news: NYC Finds Solar Energy Gold in Old Landfills
Landfill gas recovery is becoming a familiar fixture in the alternative energy scene, and now New York City has added a new dimension to the idea of extracting valuable resources from seemingly useless parcels of land. The city plans to build utility-scale solar installations on its old landfills, to the tune of about 50 megawatts.

Admittedly, that’s a drop in the bucket in terms of the city’s overall electricity use. However, the solar program is focused on achieving a clean air goal, which has its own public health value. The new solar installations will reduce emissions from petroleum-fueled generators, which the city currently has to use on hot summer days to meet peak demand. That raises an interesting point for a company with decommissioned landfills or other derelict property on its hands: aside from producing clean (and potentially cheaper) energy, what additional value could a solar installation have?

Business model for distributed solar energy in Brazil
Last week, after I searched to find examples of how companies can relate themselves to develop renewable energy market, I found one interesting case study in World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) website. It is about business model innovation for rural electrification in Brazil by Fabio Rosa’s approach.
